He also serves as the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies-International Affairs and the Director of Asia Pacific Rim Development Program at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. Dr. Zheng is the principal investigator on two R01 grants, one R21 grant and one project within a program project grant and a grant that is part of the Centers of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) from the National Institutes of Health. Dr. Zheng received his medical and graduate training at Xuzhou Medical College, Nanjing Medical University and Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine (previously Shanghai Second Medical University) in China. He joined UNMC in 1993 after he was a visiting scholar at the State University of New York at Buffalo. Dr. Zhengs research work has focused on the roles of macrophage and brain inflammation in the regulation of neuronal injury and neural stem/progenitor cells during neurodegenerative disorders including HIV-1 associated dementia and Alzheimers diseases. These studies have resulted in more than 70 peer-reviewed manuscripts and book chapters. Due to his substantial contributions towards our understanding of the role that macrophages play in HIV-1 infection and neuronal demise following persistent viral infection, he is the recipient of the UNMC 2005 Gilmore Outstanding Investigator Award. He also serves as a standing member of the NIH Neural Oxidative Metabolism and Death Study Section and an ad hoc member of the NIH Neurogenesis and Cell Fate Study Section. 5/08INTRODUCTION OFUNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA MEDICAL CENTER (UNMC)UNIVERSITY OF NEBRASKA MEDICAL CENTER (UNMC) is the only public health science center in the state.
